We have all been concerned about the radioactive contaminants
from Japans Nuclear Reactors reaching the west coast of
California and beyond. I have observed a very large spectrum
of information from "board up your houses" to "nothing
is wrong, dont worry about or prepare for anything".
Is the information coming from some entity that is trying to
sell you something newspapers, or Potassium Iodide
(KI) pills, or from politicians who are trying to keep you from
going into a panic?
One must look at the sources and find the middle ground.
The following information was gathered from many sources. I
have put in the sources so that you can read for yourself any
other information on the subject.
We have been surrounded by radiation our whole lives from one
source or another.
Naturally occurring radiation: (http://www.jlab.org/div_dept/train/rad_guide/sources.html#natural)
· cosmic radiation
· sources in the earth's crust, also referred
to as terrestrial radiation
· sources in the human body, also referred to
as internal sources.
Human sources of radiation:
· medical sources
· consumer products
· atmospheric testing of nuclear devices
· industrial uses of which nuclear plants
are just one source
Because people are concerned about radioactive Iodine, and the
possibility of Thyroid cancer, there has been a run on Potassium
Iodide, a supplement that can protect the thyroid gland from
the effects of radioactive Iodine.
According to nuclear experts, radioactive Iodine poisoning
is only a concern for people within a 50-80 mile range of the
nuclear accident.
There are other radioactive isotopes that are of much greater
concern.
The following is an excerpt from a newsletter written by Ingrid
Naiman; this and more articles can be read at this web address

The Union of Concerned Scientists is reporting that
cesium-137 has been detected (not 135 as some others reported).
It has a half life of 30 years which means that half decays in
30 years and another half in the thirty years after that and so
on and so forth, meaning the contamination will be a problem for
more than a century. Cesium is not iodine so the management protocols
need to reflect this.
Though many expect radioactive iodine will escape, no reports
I have seen suggest that this has happened.
Radioactive iodine has a half-life of eight days; it is radioactive
cesium that has been detected, not iodine.
Radioactive cesium does not occur naturally, all radioactive
cesium is a by-product of nuclear testing or nuclear accidents.
What we learned (from Chernobyl) is that radioactive iodine did
not travel very far and its effects did not last long. Nearly
all the longer-term consequences of the worst nuclear disaster
in history are attributed to cesium-137.
In her newsletter Ingrid Naiman offers a list of Herbs and
Foods that can help ward off the effects of radiation toxicity.
Ginkgo Biloba
Chyawanprash - It is regarded as a superb antioxidant and
it is radioprotective. (this is an Ayurvedic jam containing several
herbs found online at www.banyanbotanicals.com)
Bilva - this herb proves to be amazingly strong, both the
alcohol extract of the leaf and fresh fruit juice. (found in the
Chyawanprash)
Nigella sativa oil is radioprotective, alcohol extract
of black cumin seed.
Mentha arvensis (field mint) and Mentha piperita(peppermint)
Ginger protects against radiation sickness
Holy Basil protects against lipid peroxidation (a serious
consequence of free radical toxicity).
Sea Buckthorn is a very interesting plant that produces a
fruit. The juice is radioprotective.
Guduchi protects against oxidative stress.
Jamun, Syzigium cumini, seeds can protect bone marrow and
prevented death.

Other foods that would be helpful to clear any radioactive
poisons from the body include:
cleansing superfoods such as chlorella and spirulina these
foods have been used as far back as World War II to help clear
radiation exposure and quickly flush radioactive substances
from the body.
According to Dr. Jaffe, MD, Ph.D, radioactive materials
only cause damage if you dont have enough antioxidants to
absorb the free electrons generated by the free radicals in the
radioactive substances. Any stress uses up antioxidants including
environmental toxic chemicals, heavy metals, pesticides, hormone
mimicking chemicals and food additives.
With deficiency of antioxidants the body cannot repair itself
appropriately. Then the other body defense mechanism kicks
in inflammation causing pain, swelling and dysfunction
in the tissues or organs. Read more in Lucias email regarding

Although the threat of radioactive Iodine contamination does
not appear to be the major concern coming out of the Japanese
Nuclear Crisis, we should all continue to consume natural food
sources of iodine.
Foods containing Iodine include:
Seaweeds Kelp and Kombu have the highest amount.
Vegetables - In order (highest iodine content first) -
kidney beans, asparagus, cabbage, garlic, tomatoes, lettuce, potatoes.
(Also lima beans, sesame seeds, radishes, rhubarb, peas, mushrooms,
bananas, soybeans, spinach, Swiss chard, summer squash, turnip
greens, onions).
Fruits In order (highest iodine content first) -
pineapple, strawberries, grapes, and pears.
Dairy Yogurt, Milk, egg yolks, mozzarella cheese
Also there is a book by Steven Schechter on "Fighting
Radiation and Chemical Pollutants with Foods, Herbs, and Vitamins."
The book is excellent and used copies can generally be found online.

In conclusion, if we continue to eat what we know we should,
and cleanse our bodies from time to time and truly understand
the Serenity prayer, we will continue on as strong examples for
our sisters and brothers of our communities.
