Of
women who use illicit drugs, about half are in the childbearing
age group of 15 to 44.
In 1998, 38 percent of girls ages 12 through
17 reported never using alcohol, nearly
19 percent of teenage girls reported some alcohol consumption
the past month and nearly 7 percent reported binge drinking.
Among
pregnant women aged 15 to 44 years, 3.3 percent reported using
illicit drugs in the month prior to interview. This rate is significantly
lower than the rate among non-pregnant women in that age group
(7.7 percent).
Among
pregnant women aged 15 to 17 years, the rate of use of illicit
drugs was 12.9 percent, nearly equal to the rate for non-pregnant
women of the same age (13.5 percent).
