Minority Women

Of the 135 million females living in the United States, more than 36 million women are members of racial and ethnic minority groups. In 1996, 17.6 million American women were African American, 13.75 million were Hispanic or Latina, more than 5 million were Asian American or Pacific Islander, and more than 1 million were American Indian or Alaskan Native.

Minority women receive fewer preventive health interventions than white women. 55 percent of Asian American women, 43 percent of Hispanic women and 37 percent of African American women did not have a Pap test within the past year. 54 percent of Asian American women, 52 percent of African American women, and 51 percent of Hispanic women did not have a mammogram within the past two years. 74 percent of Hispanic women and 73 percent of Asian American women did not have a blood pressure screening within the past year.

Stroke occurs at a higher rate among African American and Hispanic women compared with white women.
