Women
Of
the 135 million females living in the United States, more than 36
million women are members of racial and ethnic minority groups.
In 1996, 17.6 million American women were African American, 13.75
million were Hispanic or Latina, more than 5 million were Asian
American or Pacific Islander, and more than 1 million were American
Indian or Alaskan Native.
Minority
women receive fewer preventive health interventions than white women.
55 percent of Asian American women, 43 percent of Hispanic women
and 37 percent of African American women did not have a Pap test
within the past year. 54 percent of Asian American women, 52 percent
of African American women, and 51 percent of Hispanic women did
not have a mammogram within the past two years. 74 percent of Hispanic
women and 73 percent of Asian American women did not have a blood
pressure screening within the past year.
Stroke
occurs at a higher rate among African American and Hispanic women
compared with white women.
