Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) -- includes chronic bronchitis, asthmatic bronchitis, and emphysema:
  • In 1998,COPD was the fourth leading cause of death among women, causing 52,128 deaths.

  • While COPD deaths are higher in men than in women, the rates for women have nearly doubled since 1979, with the most rapid increases occurring in women age 75 and older.

  • Between 1979 and 1998, the age-adjusted COPD death rate in males increased by 4 percent, from 23.8 to 24.7 per 100,000 persons, while the death rate in females increased by 136 percent, from 7.0 to 16.5 per 100,000 persons.

  • An estimated three million Americans have been diagnosed with emphysema sometime in their life. Of the emphysema sufferers, 57 percent are male and 43 percent are female. While more men suffer from the disease than women, the condition is increasing among women.
